Mean, Median, and Mode of the Baseball Salary Data

In this activity, you will be calculating the mean, median, and mode of the salaries for the players on two different baseball teams, the Angels and the Orioles. Which team do you think has the highest average salary? Using either Excel or the TI-83 graphing calculator, calculate the mean, median and mode for both teams.

This data exists in three files; one is in Excel Data format, one is in Text format, and one is in TI-83 group format. If you want to calculate the mean, median, and mode using the TI-83, you will have to import the data into the calculator from the computer after you have downloaded the file.

What are the mean, median, and mode of each team? What team has the highest average salary? Would the team's ranking have anything to do with the salaries? What is the salary earned most frequently by an Orioles player?

Now, suppose that the Angels traded for three superstars, each making over $3,000,000.00/yr. These superstars replace the players with the lowest salaries on the team. Recalculate the mean, median and mode. Compare the new mean, median and mode with the original ones. What statistic changed the most? the least?
